Hang Gliding

Hand Gliding LanzaroteLanzarote is the ideal winter hang gliding break. The island will take on a whole new perspective when seen from the air and additionally with its reliable weather patterns is particularly well suited to the sport.

The reliable soaring conditions and pleasant all year round temperatures, makes it perfect for hang gliding at any time.

Not a sport for the feint hearted, it gives you the freedom of the air. Many companies organize courses and group trips to Lanzarote, and on island there are companies who can supervise the activity. There is also tandem hang gliding available. The main spot on the island for this sport is off the cliffs at Famara, located in the north west of the island.

Horse Riding

Horse Riding LanzaroteWhat better way is there than to explore the island high up on a horse (and it’s probably less strenuous than walking or cycling too!). Alike many other efforts in favour of preserving Lanzarote’s natural assets, local authorities have developed defined riding routes (called Plan de Rutas Ecuestres), allowing horse-riding lovers to get in touch with the surrounding nature without any risks of personal damage because of the often-rough terrain.

There are riding centres on the island providing beginners riding classes, horseback excursions as well as ponies and games for the youngest horse lovers. These centres often include other leisure facilities like restaurants or playgrounds for children (such as the theme playground Fort Apache at the Lanzarote a Caballo Centre near Uga, on the road from Arrecife to Yaiza.

Go-Karting

Go Karting LanzaroteStart your engines. Whether you’re planning the first step in an assault on the Formula One Drivers Championship or simply having fun in the sun, children and adults will have great fun on the Go-Kart track.

Feel like a real racing driver on an outdoor circuit, with Go-Karts to suit all ages and levels of competency, from beginner to expert. There are double Go-Karts available so parents can drive with their children. There are two tracks on the island, one in San Bartolomé, the other in Puerto del Carmen. This is a perfect day out for all the family.

Tennis

Tennis In LanzaroteThere are many tennis facilities on the island. Most of the larger hotels have outdoor tennis courts, with quality surfaces. You are able to hire equipment here. Mostly, courts need to be booked in advance as they are popular with guests. Some hotels allow you to book a court even if you are not a guest of that hotel.

In addition there are many tennis schools where you can book lessons to learn how to play or simply to improve your game.

There are public tennis facilities located in the Faro Centre in Puerto del Carmen, where you can pay to use tennis courts, sunbeds and swimming pool facilities.

Trekking & Walking

TREKKING & WALKING IN LANZAROTE

Few holidaymakers realise that Lanzarote has more to offer than just beaches and sunshine. The extraordinary landscape and rugged terrain make it a fascinating place for trekking. Serious walkers may find other islands more challenging, but ramblers will be in their element on Lanzarote.

You can join an organised tour to explore the island, or you can simply create your own unique experience. A trip over to La Graciosa, the small island at the northern tip of Lanzarote, is well worth it.

Here you can walk from one side of the island to the other in around an hour or under, or even walk around the whole perimeter of the island on your day trip. You will be met with the most exquisite beaches and clear views to the other small islets of Alegranza and Montaña Clara.

Trekking round the island is really the best way to see it, and to explore all the different terrains that exist here, from the gentle rolling hills to the dramatic cliff edges. A great walk is to discover the coves and beaches of Papagayo in the south of the island near to Playa Blanca, which mostly can only be accessed on foot.

Jet & Water Skiing

Parasending, jet skiing, water skiing, a trip on a speedboat and other adrenalin producing activities are mainly offered at the major resorts. The ever popular banana boats, pedal boats and sea kayaks are also available for hire on many beaches and make a good way of getting out on the water with your children.

Parasending Lanzarote

Sailing

The Canary Islands, because of the trade winds, were the historic stopover point for transatlantic voyages – Columbus himself stopped off in The Canary Islands on his way to discovering America.

Today, many sailors stop off in Puerto Calero in Lanzarote while taking the trip of a lifetime to South America or around the World. The waters around the island offer excellent sailing conditions with plenty to see: Flying Fish, Turtles, Dolphins and Whales as well as the offshore Islands of La Graciosa (straight out of a Pirate Novel), Alegranza, Montana Clara and Isla Lobos.

Even if you have no sailing experience, you can get a taste of what it’s all about (and a little luxury too) by chartering a Yacht or taking a Catamaran excursion.

Catlanza Yacht Charter

Yacht Charters.

Windsurfing

Lanzarote is considered one of the best places in the world for windsurfing and the perfect place to take your wave riding to the next level…

watch?v=XfTdQ76fi-s

LAS CUCHARAS, COSTA TEGUISE

Las Cucharas is world renowned for its high winds and big wave riding. It has a naturally sheltered bay, ideal for beginners and less experienced windsurfers to enjoy learning or improving your windsurfing skills.

FAMARA

Located in the north of the island. From the long 3km beach you have ba beautiful view of the islands of Graciosa & Alegranza. The waves are spectacular (sideshore wind conditions). Stong current. Uncrowded windsurfing.

ORZOLA

Also located in the north. Windsurf amongst the lava rocks or ride on the east winds that often blow here. Not a spot for beginners!!

JAMEOS DEL AGUA

Situated approximately 20kms north of Costa Teguise, this is probably the hardest to surf, technically! The waves break in multiple sections over the volcanic reef. Suitable footwear is a must as you will have to cross volcanic rock to reach a take off site. You will get extremely long waves here and currents can get pretty hectic.

PLAYA HONDA

Next to the airport. This spot is dominated by the strong passat wind coming from overland, and flat sea conditions.

MATAGORDA, PUERTO DEL CARMEN

Provides flat water with bump and jump conditions.

Surfing

THE TOP PLACES FOR SURFING IN LANZAROTE

Surfing Lanzarote The Slab - At La Santa, is an experts-only wave as well as a strict, locals-only area. If you are going to surf there at all, you should do so with caution. You should surf there with a group as accidents have occurred here in the past. The wave is more dangerous than it appears from the shore.

El Quemao - This is a short sucky left breaking wave, close to shore in front of the village of La Santa. It is the heaviest wave on the island. Optimal swell is from the W to NW with accompanying S to E winds.

Harbour Mouth - A gnarly right between El Quemao and the Slab. It is extremely hollow and dangerous, go nowhere type of wave. Wipeouts push you on top of boulders 1 meter in diameter.

La Santa Right - A serious right reef when the swell is 5 foot or bigger. It generally has 3 sections which work independently, though on a good day all can connect up giving long powerful rides. Not extremely hollow but fast and bowly. Paddle out is either a sketchy jump off the rocks at the end of the point or a long paddle around from the inside. Almost always offshore. Any tide when big. Low or mid tide when smaller.

Boca del Abajo - A left which sucks off the sea bottom and breaks into a calm, deeper bay. The wave is excellent to 10ft, and even when its big, the paddle out remains relatively easy.

Caleta de Caballo - Fast lefthand break, shallow. Works from 4-8ft + on N or big NW swell and S to WSW winds. High tide best.

Ghost Town - A spectacular peak breaks in the the bay to the right of the town of Caballo when the swell is 6-8ft + N or NW. Needs SW to SE winds.

Outside Reef - 4 meters and up on maxing N swells. 500 meters out to sea.

San Juan - Reef break with both rights and lefts, the left being longer. The right is best before and after high tide, the left all the way through high to low tide. A good place to check when everywhere else is flat. Picks up most N and NW swell. Best on S to SW wind.

Famara Harbor Reef - On the far left corner of Famara Beach, a lefthand
reefbreak. Fast, hollow waves, shallow. Best around 4-8ft. Works on N or NW swell, with winds from the SE to SSW.

Playa de Famara - Long sweeping beach with sand-bottom breaks throughout its length, providing fast often hollow lefts and rights. Works from 2 to 8ft. On smaller days, suitable for beginners, especially towards the N end where the waves get smaller due to offshore island shadowing. On bigger days however, getting through the whitewater to the outside can be both impossible and undesireable.

Golf Courses

Golf Course Costa Teguise

COSTA TEGUISE

Avenida del Golf s/n
Costa Teguise 35509
Tel No: +34 928 590512
www.lanzarote-golf.com

Located in the outskirts of Costa Teguise and situated at the base of the Tahiche long extinct volcano. An 18 hole par 72 course, it is beautiful to play on and is surrounded by subtropical vegetation including 3,000 palm trees and figs.

The course is designed to be both smooth and varied. Its numerous doglegs stimulate players and require them to bring all their clubs into play. It even represents a challenge for professional players, whilst offering an attractive and enjoyable game for those of more modest skills.

In addition to its privileged location, it benefits from a warm and pleasant climate all year round, which is tempered by a sea breeze from the island’s almost constant trade winds.

Opened in 1978, the facilities include a restaurant & cafeteria, golf academy, club and buggy hire and pro shop.

Fishing

There are many different types of fishing in Lanzarote, for novices and pros alike.

With our exceptional climate all year round the sea temperature rarely drops below 19ºC in winter and rises to 26ºC in summer. The ocean floor varies to depths of 3,500 meters which allows for deep sea fishing.

The waters around Lanzarote are home to a fine array of prized big fish. And as a result, game fishing is a very popular pastime.

Overseas anglers can encounter all sorts of exotic species such as sharks, tuna, marlin and wahoo.

The main big game fishing season runs from May through to November. Whilst bottom fishing for species such as bream is possible all year round.

There are numerous fishing excursions available. Most of which run out of either Puerto del Carmen old town harbour or the newer marina at Puerto Calero. Usually, collection from your accommodation and lunch is included in the price.

These excursions can either be booked direct – or via the reception area at your accommodation. Prices start from as little as €75.

Some operators even offer mini-fishing breaks – such as to the neighbouring island of Graciosa.

Recent Guestbook Comments:

“We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this villa, very comfortable, quiet and with beautiful sea and mountain views. We hope to be able to return soon.” - Michael & Morag Weir, Scotland (Xmas 2007)

“Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, thank you!” - Rose-marie & Tony Jackson, Oxford (Jan 2008)

Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by the owner of the villa who had kindly ensured we had food and drink when we arrived, which was very helpful.  The staff who maintain the villa were only a phonecall away.  A perfect place to really get away from it all.  The villa is very spacious and has everything you need for any event.  Utilities are great for cooking and having barbecues.  We loved the out house with the barbecue and large dining table.  The villa was very welcoming and very homely.  Outside the villa the garden is planted  with shrubs and some pretty trees and the mountain behind the villa is pretty and there is always somewhere different to hide to read or sunbathe.  Each room has an atmosphere of its own, whether you want a quiet time away or a funfilled one this villa can cater for both.  It is a five minute drive to the local town or beach but the villa has a local shop which has everything. A wonderful holiday!  Samantha Norrington (March 2008)

Above our expectations.  Quiet, relaxing, beautiful & private.  We didn’t hire a car but taxi’s were cheap & it was nice to go from the busy town back to the quiet villa. Many thanks for all of your help & a wonderful holiday!

Lanzarote is a very beautiful island, and the Villa Maxim is ideal to visit all the interesting places. The villa is very cosy, the environment is quiet and the view on the hills and the sea is great.

To recommend to friends, and I do so…

A very well appointed, and presented villa with lots of charm and character. Unusual to find a three storey villa in Nazaret. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return. We were expecting great views given how high up the hillside the villa is, but they surpassed our expectations, they were amazing!!!

We chose Villa Maxim for our honeymoon and could not have been more thrilled when we arrived.  It is an exceptionally well furnished property with all the comforts of home and the views are amazing.  We hope to return soon.
